A rink about half the size of our present rink was built at Sahara and Speedway over 42 years ago. A group of skating families got together and formed the Tucson Figure Skating Club in 1959. At that time the boot and blade became our club emblem. The activities of the club included ice shows and test sessions. There have been an number dedicated skaters coming our of this program. We have had skaters join the "Ice Capades Show", "Disney on Ice", and the Europe tour of "Holiday on Ice".
To encourage skating, a skating program was instituted by the club. We had a group of school children from Wetmore school on Craycroft and Glenn spend six weeks bowling, skating and playing tennis at Ft. Lowell park. Also in another group lesson program we had over 75 students, some of which still skate and teach skating in Tucson today. Other members of the TFSC have gone on to be USFSA judges.
As the owners of our original rink changed frequently, it fell into disrepair and was finally closed in 1988. A small band of dedicated skaters held the club together and skated twice a week at the Tucson Convention Center for 8 years during the six months of hockey season.
A new rink was being built at Kolb and Speedway which was exciting, and the club waited with anticipation for the opening of an excellent rink in Tucson. Our hopes were dashed when construction was stopped by the Federal government.
A group of investors from Canada came to Tucson and wanted to build a rink on Parks and Recreation land. The city council was very interested in the project and worked with the club and the investors to make it happen. Before the final vote for the project a new investor appeared on the scene to finish the rink at Kolb and Speedway. With the prospect of a private investor in the picture the council cancelled its plans and our present rink was completed.
After a year and a half of negotiation our present rink became our home rink. From that point on our club membership has gradually increased. The test level has increased and we have been able to produce ice shows and the annual Tucson Invitational Skating competition.
It is now all of our opportunity to participate and help our club meet its full potential. We are only as good as our members will allow us to be.
Respectfully Submitted Margaret A. Fisher
